I know back in the 80s it was because men were in more car accidents, but nowadays, it's about the same, yet men pay more for their insurance than women do? At least that's the way it works in Canada.
men are known to drive faster and are not as cautious as woman that is what happens when you are a man

I received a check from a car insurance company and the check was more than the actually cost of the damage, do I give the rest of the money back? The check was 2120 dollars and the actual cost was $1700, is the rest of the money mine or do I have to give it back to the company?
You get to keep the rest of the money.
One of my friends works a minimum wage job, and his car insurance for one year costs more than he paid for his 87 Mazda truck. He paid $1300 for the truck and his insurance is $1800 per year. Between insurance and gas, he is working just to drive the truck, he told me he is just going to drop the insurance on the truck, because the truck is a piece of crap and is not worth $1800 for just basic coverage. I tried to talk him out of it, but he said he is not paying that price to insure a piece of junk.
He's not solely insuring the car, he's insuring himself against financial liability if he's in an accident.
It's against the law to drive without insurance.
My brother lives in Sweden and pays so much less then he did (And I do) in the UK. More than that over there it's the car that is insured rather than the driver (or at least with his policy) so anyone over 25 years old can drive it!
So apart from the 5% tax that the government charge why are our policies so much more - Is there anyone who working in the insurance industry who can answer this please?
I'd love to not buy car insurance but in the UK it is compulsory
Think the UK is expensive? Try Ireland on for size!
Is getting into an accident with a more expensive car (Mercedes Benz or Ferrari) worse than getting into an accident with a cheaper car (Honda civic or toyota corolla) in terms of your insurance rate increasing? (given that you are at fault)
it depends what car is safer for the people inside the car. chances are the civic will crumble more than a 'stiffer' benz meaning that more damage is done to the civic and more people have medical bills. insurance agents look at the whole picture if a 16 year old does a total of 20k in damage (property damage and medical bills) and a 40 year old does 80k in damage chances are the 16 year olds rates will increase more, they have not 'proven' them selfs as drivers yet and now they look like a higher risk driving for one year and have already had an accidents vs driving for 20 years and has only had 1 accident in 7 years.
Is it true that men file more insurance claims than women?
We all know that there’s a war between sexes on who are better drivers, men or women? And as men are claiming to be far better at the wheel the statistics are actually on the opposite side. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Report dated 2004 notes men being involved in 27,000 more fatal accidents, 432,000 more injury accidents and 1,369,000 more incidents with damaged property, resulting in total 1,828,000 more insurance claims filed by men in 2004 only. And since then the trend hasn’t changed.
And it’s hard to tell that the most risky drivers – men younger than 25 years old – are contributing to these statistics. These are actually men of all age groups.
...Old and low insured value cars are more prone to theft than others
According to the data for claims released by RACV Insurance, most of car thieves in Victoria are targeting cars which are insured for small amounts and those which are almost a decade old. Cars that were more than nine years old were the favourites of thieves, as they accounted for about 73 percent of car theft claims. Cars having less than $6000 insurance value accounted for more than half the claims filed with RACV. Vehicles that were less than three years old accounted for only 4.5 percent of the theft claims with the company.
Car owners are quite careful if they are driving a new car, but they become less careful when they have an older model and they think that probably the new model of the car parked next to theirs will be the easier target for theft than their car, apparently because of the high value of the new ones. But they forget that those new models would be having all kinds of anti-theft devices installed in their cars and thieves would not like taking a risk with those models.
